Serifos

In the north-west Cyclades, between Sifnos
and Kythnos.

Serifos is nearly round and has a very
indented coastline. It has a population of 900 inhabitants, a
surface area of 78 square kilometres, a diameter of about 10 kms
from one side to the other and a coastal perimeter of 70 kms. Main
town: Chora and its main port: Livadi.

According
to legend, Serifos gets its name from the ancient Greek term
"sterifos", which means sterile. This is somewhat true as at
first glance it seems completely arid and rocky. But it has many
underground springs that have helped produce fertile valleys where
lemon trees, fruit trees and vineyards flourish, the latter
producing an excellent red wine.
In the south of the island are steep rocky mountainous massifs whose
highest point, Mount Troullos, is at an altitude of 585
metres. The very indented coastline shelters some beautiful beaches,
several bays and a multitude of creeks.
The landscape is characterized by innumerable terraced cultivations
half abandoned today "sculpted" on the slopes and hills. Drystone
walls following the configuration of the land extend over hundreds
of kilometres and are so close to the hills that they blend into the
soil, where many aromatic bushes grow.

Serifos is a fascinating
island that has miraculously remained outside the major tourist
influx.
It offers tourists superb untouched landscapes, a countryside shaped
by the hands of men, and beautiful beaches and creeks where you can
swim in privacy.
In addition, it has one of the most beautiful villages found on the
Cyclades, Chora. Chora is built on a rocky outcrop in
the form of a sugarloaf.
Ideal for a relaxing, worry-free holiday, this little island will
appeal to anyone who loves nature, quiet beaches, or hikes. Don't
hesitate to take the mule tracks which cut across it in order to
discover, understand and appreciate the area in a relaxing way.
