Folegandros

In the Cyclades of the south, between Santorini and Milos.

Folegandros is almost oval-shaped and has a very indented
coastline. Its population is 558 inhabitants, its surface area 30
km2 and its coastal perimeter 40 kms.
Main town: Chora. Main port: Karavostassi.

Folegandros is a very small volcanic island which is both
arid and mountainous. It is surrounded by several spurs which show
through the surface of the waters.
Its impressive sheer cliffs over 200 metres high have been swept and
carved by the winds. Terraced fields cover the hills, bordered by
interminable low stone walls which curve their way through the
island.
Folegandros
is becoming a popular tourist destination, mostly frequented by
Athenians and Italians. During the summer months it is very
difficult to find accommodation without a reservation.
Its main town, Chora, is snuggled up against the cliffs and
offers magnificent views over the sea. It is among the most
beautiful of the villages in the Cyclades and stands out from the
other islands for its special kind of town planning.
Everything combines to give the place its unique atmosphere -- its
steep slopes, its little houses clinging to the summit with their
wooden balconies suspended above a great void, and their pleasant
little squares that give the village a very cosy feel. There are
chapels and taverns everywhere. To make it perfect, no cars are
allowed.

Folegandros will appeal to those who appreciate wild
landscapes, hiking trails and near-deserted creeks.
Take the time to walk so you can take in the wild beauty of the
trails, and the smell of thyme, oregano and sage. Explore either on
foot, on a donkey or in a caïque and discover a little creek
nestling in the hollow of a cliff. In Chora, you can laze
about the Greek way and meet the friendly islanders.
